Difficulties with planning

  • Use meta-cognitive techniques and instruction to help students learn to be aware of the learning process. For older children, forms such as a self-monitoring sheet can be used to understand the process of learning new material. For younger children, a desk chart or flower chart can visually explain how the parts of learning tie together. These tools can be used for any learning material, not just behavioral replacement.

  • Guide students to connect an assignment with something they already know or with something that looks familiar. Then have them scan the assignment to see what they need to do. After they have scanned and analyzed the tasks, encourage them to ask themselves if they are able to do the assignment or if they have questions.

  • Teach the students to use self-talk and guide them thorough a "plan-do-review" approach to completing problems.
